Posted by Harry Jiang on 02/14/2017 - 05:27

As a follow-up to my previous article concerning the Changzhou Foreign Languages School controversy, in which hundreds of students' health are affected by toxic waste from a nearby chemical plant, I created the documentary that critically evaluates parents', students', teachers', as well as government officials' response to this incident. This video is now on YouTube. Please click on the links below to view my work:

The moko kauae, a sacred female chin tattoo for the Maoris of Polynesia, is making a revival amongst the indigenous women of the region. This body and facial tattooing is known as Ta moko, and amongst the Maori women, "was a rite of passage, maeking the passage between girl and adulthood." This meant to signify family and social heritage, along with beliefs regarding the afterlife. The tattoos are of intricate design, none alike in their make, and used to be made through a chiseling tool and black ink. It was banned and discontinued due to colonization and the repression of all that is... Read More

On Jul.30, there was another extremely cruel honour killing happened in Punjab, Pakistan. 35 year-old NazirHussid killed both sisters of his before the day they were going to get married with their fiances because he thought it will be better for them to marry 2 decent distant relatives.

In fact, there are 1000 females killed in the so-called honour killing in Pakistan every year, and 5000 female die in honour killing all around the world each year. And just one week before this case, a couple were also threated by family members of the female involved in this case, who then ended... Read More

China abandons the One-Child Policy.”  The Chinese government has already announced that China has moved towards the Two-Child policy, giving the misleading impression that all coercive population control had ceased.  A close analysis of several reports coming out of China, however, demonstrates that Chinese government sources themselves inadvertently have admitted that forced abortion continues under the Two-Child Policy. That is to say that forced abortion still remains in this new coming policy.

I don't think that government should interfere with forced abortion or limiting the... Read More

Ghina Wadi, a nine-year old girl from Madaya, Syria, was shot in the leg while walking with her sister to bring medicine to her mother. Because the surgery she needed was not available in the beseiged town, locals pleaded the government for Ghina to be allowed to leave, but she was not allowed to do so. Fortunately, a social media campaign supported by Amnesty International as well as the United Nations with the hastag #SaveGhina was enough to allow volunteers to carry her in a stretcher to a hospital where her leg could be treated. Thousands of people like her are living in beseiged areas... Read More

Donald Trump, the candidate chosen by the Republican party of the United States, reiterated his plans to limit the immigration of Muslims to the United States, on the grounds of Islam being dangerous to American Women. Citing cases such as honor killings in Pakistan and an Iraqi immigrant who murdered his own daughter because she was too 'westernized', Trump wants to solidify his claim that Islam and women don't mix. Here Trump uses threat against women to brand Islam as dangerous, to brand them as the 'other', a barbaric, inferior culture that has no place in America. This 'tactic' of... Every woman at some point or another will get their period- it is a coming of age, a natural, biological occurrence. And yet, to discuss it, or mention it as a woman is seen as "dirty" or "inappropriate".

In both sports and in China, the words "menstration cycle" have a negative taboo. In fact, tampon and pad commercials have been banned from playing. Furthermore, tampons are rarely sold as they are thought to "rob a girl of her virginity".

All these negative connotations with having a period make it seem shameful and unhygenic, when in reality, it is nothing anyone, not... Read More

Nauru: Australia's asylum seeker prison
Posted by ejbentley on 08/12/2016 - 19:52

“Assaults, sexual abuse, self-harm, inhuman conditions – over 2,000 newly leaked reports paint a sordid picture of Australia’s offshore refugee detention operations on the Pacific island of Nauru.” By forcibly transferring refugees and people seeking asylum to Nauru, detaining them for prolonged periods in inhuman conditions, denying them appropriate medical care, and in other ways structuring its operations so that many experience a serious degradation of their mental health, the Australian government has violated the rights to be free from torture and other ill-treatment, and from... Posted by Shruti Venkatraman on 08/10/2016 - 20:03

4th August 2016

Court proceedings pertaining to human rights abuses including sexual exploitation and indiscriminate civilian killings in Somalia have begun in public hearings before Uganda's military court, with media coverage. This is an important step towards increased transparency and helps to put concerns over the fairness of the trial at rest. However, other involved regional actors that were also involved in the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) have taken no steps towards setting up military trials. Hopefully the Ugandan efforts will serve as a positive example for... Read More
