"What is Abolition?" - Critical Resistance

Here is Critical Resistance's introduction to prison abolitionism. In this pamphlet, Critical Resistance explains the term abolitionism, the term prison industrial complex, what public safety is about, issues presented by the prison industrial complex, and steps towards change. The issue of detainment, torture, and incarceration are all tied together since the same companies that facilitate human rights violations in Guantanamo bay are linked with black sites abroad as well as other state actors.

So, let's take some time to think about the narrative of the trans community within the prison cistem*. I use the term cistem as it more accurately paints the structures and frameworks often identified as 'systems'--created by and for cisgender people without acknowledgement of trans identities and communities. Within oppressed communities I hear talk primarily of low income, colored people affected by the prison cistem with little or no acknowledgement of trans communities. Trans and trans of color communities are real and here. Reading this, I think about who movements are being led by and why so few are led by formerly incarerated people who have faced oppression. How can we fight the cistem long enough so colored trans communities can lead the movement to end the policing and control of their bodies by the government?
